Ah, so it wasn't just me who had difficulty understanding John Black's
post, which indeed appears somewhat contradictory regarding "good works."
I could interpret the post as suggesting that while we are not called to
start orphanages, we might just be allowed to help out a bit where
possible. However, reading the text of the post again, there is no clear
indication that the couple visiting Romania did anything about the
shortage of shoes, cups and toilet paper. So I cannot really be sure
what point is being made there.
I could also interpret the post as suggesting that, along with not
founding orphanages, we should not be involved in such things as mission
hospitals, schools and relief work such as for the recent tsunami
(except in the case where relief can be targeted directly at out fellow
believers who have suffered in the distaster) as providing medical
support, education, food and water to those who have none goes beyond
our call in Matthew 28.19. But I could be accused of reading more into
the post than John intended.
I look forward to some form of clarification, as someone who is
relatively young in the faith.
