I am in China at the moment. One of my projects over the years here
has been to train teachers of the deaf. Many deaf people in the past
have been hidden away in shame or put into back rooms to make items to
sell to tourists.
The first college level program for the deaf in China has been
opened in Nanjing and early programs for the deaf are opening up.
Another program is an orphanage for autistic children. It has been
important to see that working in an orphanage is not a matter for low
esteem but an opportunity to serve.
The church in China has found serving the handicapped and the
elderly a very important role based on some passages that I will
explain when I am home.
