Phil,

Name, Title, is there a difference?

The Name/Title Plymouth Brethren wasn't something penned by any of its members. It was given to us over 150 Years ago. Since then, the U.S. Govt used this name when they took a census of all religions. Do you want all of us put our heads in the sand and pretend all of this never happened? I know how much you hate it, but what real difference does it make for someone to use it to help someone better understand who we are? Would you rather they "think" we are a communist cell? Perhaps all PB's understand our peculiar jargon, but that doesn't mean the kids at school or friends at work can understand it.

The fact of the matter is that certain names/titles get stuck on items that are incorrect. Kleenix used to belong to only one brand, but now is a generic name that refers to all of the brands. There are lots of different brand copiers that are referred to as "the xerox" machine in offices.

Now, I have to admit that I'm especially enthused about being able to finally explain in terms they understand to non christians and even other christians that I belong to the Plymouth Brethren and go on to explain who they are and what they stand for and against. For 33 years I was at a loss to explain in terms they could understand who I was associated with. I know that many thought I was either a Communist or a Jehovah's Witness.

The term "The Saints Gathered to the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ," is a Title, Name or designation. (Otherwise why not just say, "a few people meeting together to enjoy the things of the Lord?") The phrase won't be found in scripture either.

Now here are some Names, Titles or designations that ARE found in scripture. So much for the idea of NOT having such attached to where we meet the Lord in the midst!
